Prevention

To prevent infection, health care providers are recommended to use
  • gloves
  • hand washing
  • environmental disinfection
  • use dedicated thermometers-- several outbreaks have been directly linked to contaminated thermometers
  • When a patient is diagnosed as haveing C. difficle

    • private room
    • contact precautions. That means wearing gloves whenever you enter the patient's room and when touching the patient, anything he touches, or any surface or piece of equipment in his room.
    • contact physician and D/C all antidiarrhea medication
    • document stool frequency and consistency
    • disinfect ALL equipment before it leaves the pt. room with a hypochlorite-based disinfectant.
    • Pt. may be taken out of isolation only after s/he has received 7 complete days of therapy and is asymptomatic.
    • Wear gowns and masks when changing grossly contaminated linens
    • If possible, use disposable equipment, such as thermometers or blood pressure cuffs
